The easiest way to begin the study of the 22 form is by considering the practice of the Elongated Wrist.
My teacher, Master L, explained the importance of the Elongated Wrist in a simple manner. Imagine that your home water pipe is connected to a reservoir. Each time you turn on the tap you have to wait for the water to flow from the reservoir down the pipe before reaching your home.
However, in a modern home you only have to turn on the tap and the water gushes out right away. This is convenient as you do not have to wait for the water to flow all the way from the reservoir.
The training of the Elongated Wrist is to enable the force to flow out of our body on demand. You don’t have to get into a stance, move your body in so many ways, go through a breathing pattern and get your Chi flowing before your can use the force.
As long as you have the Elongated Wrist the force is always there like water on tap in a modern home. When you want to use it you just amplify it with the assistance of mental projection whether through the use of the Small Chi Sphere, Three Chi Rings or other force vectors available through the various force models that is listed in Grandmaster Wei’s book on the 22 form.
The practice of the Elongated Wrist is not just a matter of straightening the hand to wrist connection or is it to pose the hand like a lady’s hand. The proper practice of the Elongated Wrist requires us to imagine that there is an iron band clamped around the wrist, causing the hand to keep straight in relation to the wrist.
In addition, the wrist has to feel as if it is being stretched out. This in turn, causes the hand to feel as if it is being lengthened. If you do this right, you can feel the power right away.
In this manner, this is kind of like an instant Zen enlightenment. The ability to visualize and feel is the key here.
Keep on practicing until the hand and wrist merge to become as if it is one unit. At this stage it will feel as if you no longer have a hand. You can then play around with the various force projection models.
